The Utopian Studies Society-Europe is an interdisciplinary society that aims to co-ordinate and encourage the diverse work currently taking place on the subject of utopianism. Its members include people researching literature, philosophy, cinema, sociology, history, architecture, politics, anthropology, and other disciplines.
The Society was established in 1988 by a group of British scholars, following an international conference on utopianism at New Lanark. It was re-launched following the “Millennium of Utopias” conference at the University of East Anglia in June 1999.
The motto of the 19th conference, “In Search of New Harmonies”, suggests an array of interpretations for the present state of things, but clearly hints at the universe of possibilities ahead. Revolutions, change and even co-existence are born from the best and the worst of times, and although New Harmonies may seem harder to achieve than ever, it is our responsibility as academics and individuals to contribute to the establishment of new areas of interaction.
This year, the conference will be jointly organised by the Universitat Rovira i Virgili (Tarragona) and the HISTOPIA research project (Universidad Autónoma de Madrid). The venue of the conference will be the Campus Catalunya of the Universitat Rovira i Virgili, in downtown Tarragona.
